Flemington Racecourse
The very horse race was run at Flemington in 1840 and became for use as a public entity in 1848. On Melbourne Cup race day over 100,000 people flock to enjoy Australia's greatest holiday.
Melbourne became a city with money following the gold rush in the mid 1800s. This then led to the Melbourne Cup becoming a social and fashion event as well as the national sporting highlight of the year.
The Flemington management has constantly upgraded the course over the years with major investments in the early part of the centuary with upto £25 million pounds of improvements.
One of the features of the course is the statue of Phar Lap, the Birdcage is another picturesque area where the horses are stabled while waiting to run their races. Another area that deserves special mention is the old Members' Grandstand with its art-moderne styling and elegant lines.
One of the main viewing areas is the Hill Stand which was ungraded in the late 1970s. It is the place to watch the racing as it is adjacent to the finishing line and has great facilities including top restaurants, bars and also excellent Melbourne Cup betting opportunities including the bookmakers and the tote.
