In a thrilling finish, it was the Bart Cummings trained Viewed who nosed out the blistering final furlong attack of Bauer. The two could barely be parted on the line, but all credit to Viewed, he held on very gamely under jockey Blake Shinn.

Fot trainer, Luca Cumani, it was heart breaking to see his horse, Bauer, edged out out into second place, as he had the second in the race in 2007. His other horse and alledgedly his lead horse, Mad Rush, could only manage 7th spot; he appeared not to get the trip on the very fast ground. C'est La Guerre managed a creditable third spot

There had been plenty of support for the Dermot Weld trained Profound Beauty, and she ran a big race finishing fifth, again not quite getting the trip. For top European trainer, Aiden O'Brien, it was a hugely diappointing day, with all three of his horses, including long time race favourite, Septimus, finishing at the rear of the field.

The day however belonged to eighty year old trainer, Bart Cummings, Viewed was his 12th winner of the Melbourne Cup and he said afterwards that he has plenty of candidates to run in 2009.
